Preparation for an Earthquake
- Have a fire extinguisher or water reserve handy for putting out fires.
- Secure furniture to prevent it from toppling over.
- Prepare an emergency kit that can easily be taken with you if you need to evacuate (always keep your passport in a handy spot).
- Have family meetings to discuss where you would meet or how you would contact each other in an emergency.
- Be familiar with your neighborhood evacuation center and how to get there.
If an Earthquake Strikes (When you are indoors)
- Protect yourself under a sturdy table.
- Do not rush outside.
- Open a door or window to secure an exit.
- Quickly turn off all sources of fire.
* When you feel a large earthquake, stay calm and protect yourself.
Immediately Following an Earthquake
- Shut off the gas valve, and turn off the electric circuit breaker switch.
- Put on your shoes to protect your feet from pieces of shattered glass.
- Prepare an emergency backpack, and keep luggage to a minimum.
- Check on the safety of your neighbors.
- Collect accurate information from the radio.
- Keep telephone use to a minimum.
- Cooperate with your neighbors in firefighting and rescue activities.

If an earthquake occurs, the largest tremors occur during the first minute. The greatest danger during an earthquake is a fire. It is important to maintain good relations with your neighbors so that in times of disaster you will be able to help each other out. |

Types of Shelters:
- Temporary Refuge Shelter
A shelter just large enough to provide ample protection from immediate danger.
- Primary Shelter
A shelter large enough to offer protection from life-threatening disasters, as well as to provide overnight shelter, food and medical supplies, etc.
- Large Open-Area Shelter
A shelter large enough to offer protection to mass numbers of people during major, large-scale natural disasters.
