Notifying the Fire Department

Dial 119 without an area code from any telephone (including car phones and portable or cellular phones) to call the Fire Department. Since the Fire Department dispatches ambulances as well as fire trucks, be sure to specify first whether you are calling to report a fire ("kaji") or to request an ambulance ("kyukyu").

How to Call the Fire Department from a Public Telephone

Like calling the police, when calling from a public telephone, simply press the red emergency button and dial 119.

Ambulances

For emergencies such as severe illness or serious injuries, call an ambulance (the service is free of charge). When you hear the siren approaching your area, stand outside to guide the ambulance staff.

Damage/Ambulance Certificates

If you need verification of damages or use of an ambulance due to a fire, the Minami Fire Department and Kita Fire Department issue official certificates.

Ambulances should be used only for highly urgent injuries and illnesses. In less serious cases, private transportation should be used.
